Politico Headline: "Poll: Steady Support for Immigration" Really?
Does the reporter and/or the headline writer have an agenda? The poll that the headline trumpets is a Gallup poll which finds that 18 percent of Americans support increasing immigration. According to Gallup, that is up from 14 percent in 2009. What about the other 82 percent of Americans? Well, 35 percent of Americans would like to see immigration levels stay just about where they are and 43 percent support reducing immigration to the United States.Of course, Politico is the ultimate Inside-the-Beltway publication. Compared with a Gallup poll done last week which found that 17 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, I suppose 18 percent approval for increasing immigration could be interpreted as “steady support.”
