State and Local Counsel/Advisor
Advancement Intern
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) seeks part-time or full-time, paid interns to join our Advancement Department. The ideal intern will have an interest in nonprofit work, particularly in development, fundraising, and digital communications. Advancement interns will have a wide-range of responsibilities and will provide valuable support for FAIR’s fundraising and digital communications efforts.
General Responsibilities:
- Analyze FAIR’s social media and website traffic
- Design graphics for social sharing
- Assist with video and podcast production
- Post to ¬FAIR’s website and blog
- Draft internal and external communications
- Attend planning and strategy meetings
- Provide administrative support as needed to members of the Advancement team
Qualifications:
- A current student or recent graduate of an accredited university
- A creative thinker who can share ideas and see initiatives from start to finish
- A resourceful self-starter with a can-do attitude
- A passion for the digital space and an understanding for issue-based work
- Able to handle multiple tasks and work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work individually and in a team environment
- Possess solid oral and written communication skills
- Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, Sprout Social or HTML5 a plus
- Must be available to work at least 2-3 days a week in our downtown D.C. office (near Union Station)

Email Marketing Specialist
Does your heart flutter when you see open and click through rates increase? FAIR is looking for an Email Marketing Specialist to ensure the delivery of our organization’s message to the appropriate email segments in order to drive fundraising and activism goals. The ideal candidate is a strong writer who is collaborative, responsive, flexible, digitally savvy, detail-oriented, creative and data-driven. The Email Marketing Specialist is a part of FAIR’s Advancement Team.
Responsibilities:
- Plan, develop and execute all email communications for the organization in partnership with appropriate departments
- Perform day-to-day email marketing tasks including: designing creative, writing copy, reviewing and scheduling campaigns
- Monitor email performance and generate analytics reports to assess delivery and campaign efficiency in order to inform decisions on future campaigns
- Segment target audiences in email database and oversee lists to ensure subscribers are placed in the proper communication pathways at all times
- Manage the email database for lead generation, clean out non-deliverable email addresses/opt-outs and attempt to revive inactive subscribers
- Identify opportunities to improve existing and develop new email campaigns that drive engagement and donations; conduct research on email operations of similar organizations.
- Perform testing across all areas of email marketing including: landing pages, imagery, copy, subject lines, mobile optimization, etc.
- Collaborate with Government Relations and State & Local departments to create and schedule grassroots activism email campaigns
- Partner with Advancement team to guarantee marketing campaigns and promotions are integrated across all platforms including: social media, web, direct mail and email
- Work with Direct Response Manager to create integration between direct mail and email marketing efforts and drive email and online fundraising efforts
Qualifications:
- BA/BS in related field such as marketing, analytics or statistics, communications, political science or related field
- 2-4 years of related, proven successful work experience, preferably with an advocacy-oriented non-profit organization or a political campaign
- Experience with email service providers, Salesforce preferred
- Experience working with marketing automation tools, Marketo preferred
- Solid knowledge of HTML and content management systems, Drupal preferred
- Experience with grassroots activism platform, Phone-2-Action, a plus
- Experience in tracking email data, formulating reports and conducting A/B testing
- Working knowledge of email best practices including: design principles, metrics, testing, data hygiene and compliance
- Excellent written communication and copywriting skills
- Strong analytical skills with understanding of Google Analytics
- A collaborative spirit and team orientation
- Interest in making a real difference with your work and comfortable working in a more controversial area of public policy
- Must be creative, extremely detail-oriented and organized
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work both cooperatively with departments across the organization and independently when appropriate
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities

Policy Researchers/Writers
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is seeking junior to senior level policy researchers and writers. FAIR promotes reforms that serve the nation’s broad national interests. Our research is read by a broad political spectrum of Americans who are concerned about the cost and the impact that mass, unregulated immigration has on jobs, schools, crime, national security, population and the environment. Experience/Qualifications:
- Senior positions require 5-10 years of experience in immigration enforcement, political science, economics, demographics, law, or national security. Public speaking and supervisory experience preferred. Master’s degree, JD or PhD preferred.
- Junior positions require 1-5 years of experience in the same fields, ideally in a journalistic, academic or policy environment along with public speaking abilities.
- Both positions require: (1) Excellent writing skills and demonstrated ability of having published original research. (2) Strong data/analytical skills including the ability to present complex concepts in terms non-specialized audiences can understand. (3) Ability to adjust to changing priorities and produce a large volume of high quality reports and issue briefs while providing ad hoc research support to other FAIR departments and external inquires.
Major Responsibilities:
- Engage in original, fact-based research or investigative projects. Produce short issue briefs tied to current news trends and longer studies illuminating the cost and impact of immigration, especially on American jobs and wages.
- Publish articles for website and opinion pieces for external publication.
- Assist with the preparation and fact-editing of press releases and other media responses and statements.
- Survey newly released government data to determine relevance to FAIR and where it could be used to update existing publications.
- Contribute weekly articles to FAIR’s blog site.
- Provide research support to other staff members as needed.
- Provide on-record comments and analysis to the media in areas of expertise.
- If needed, provide immigration related testimony in front of legislative bodies.
- Give presentations to academic and professional groups.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter, possesses superior verbal and written communication skills, self-motivated, team player and knack for problem solving.

State and Local Counsel/Advisor
Join a team of dedicated professionals at a dynamic time in the immigration reform movement, as the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) expands its efforts to achieve stable immigration levels and enforceable immigration limits.
FAIR currently seeks an individual who will represent FAIR’s legislative and administrative interests before state legislatures, state administrative and executive bodies, activists, advocacy groups, and the media.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor, analyze and summarize state and local legislation, ordinances, initiatives and policy changes
- Draft legislative summaries and policy briefs and grassroots alerts, for a variety of audiences
- Engage in direct and grassroots lobbying/activism
- Work with other departments to identify, inform, and mobilize activists, members, and supporters on key pieces of legislation
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with legislators, legislative staff, advocacy groups and activists
- Develop an expertise in immigration law, policy, and politics
- Represent FAIR in coalitions, public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, national forums, and in general communications with public officials, the media, FAIR members, the donor community, and the public
- Assist FAIR’s departments with tasks relating to education, development, publications, media coverage and develop advocacy strategies
- Draft reports, fact sheets, and testimony as needed
- Obtain legislative and political information and generally assisting the advocacy work on FAIR’s State and Local Department
- Be a committed and effective advocate for all FAIR’s programs and objectives
Qualifications:
- State and Local Counsel: Juris Doctor Degree required. Must be barred in the District of Columbia (or must be willing and able to become D.C.-barred)
- State and Local Advisor/Associate: Undergraduate degree in Political Science, Public Policy, History, or related field or graduate degree in a similar field, including law
- Legislative experience preferred
- Political judgment and sensitivity is a must
- Strong writing and communication skills, including attention to detail
- Unwavering commitment to professionalism in all aspects of one’s performance
- Ability to conduct original research, analyze data, and produce work product in a consistent, efficient, and timely manner
- Other relevant experience with public policy, education, grassroots organizing, communications, editing, and/or development
- Ability to work effectively as part of FAIR’s legislative advocacy team
