Obama Focuses on Promises to Illegal Aliens Amid Failure to Improve Lives of Americans
(October 24, 2013 — Washington, D.C.) — The following statement was issued by Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), regarding President Obama’s continued push for mass amnesty and increased immigration:
President Obama’s speech today once again illustrates his willingness to put the interests of illegal aliens and party politics ahead of the American people. Despite his administration achieving no significant reduction in unemployment in recent months and more Americans being forced to drop out of the work force, Obama is sending the clear message that his priority is amnesty for illegal aliens.
Since taking office, President Obama has placed political achievement ahead of struggling Americans. Congress has failed to hand him a victory on immigration, so he’s gradually enacted amnesty for large classes of illegal aliens through the abuse of executive power.
The president’s continued focus on passing an immigration bill in the House is wishful thinking. In the aftermath of the government shutdown and the continued dismantling of immigration enforcement, Republicans’ distrust of the president has peaked.
House Republicans should be wary of passing any immigration legislation. Democrat leaders in both the Senate and the House have publicly acknowledged they have one goal: get any immigration bill to pass the House and use it to conference with the Senate amnesty plan.
Amnesty for 12 million illegal aliens and the expansion of foreign labor is not immigration reform. True immigration reform would benefit struggling Americans, not reward law-breaking illegal aliens. Border security, worksite enforcement, and skills-based immigration would deter illegal immigration, protect our national security, and put Americans back to work. That should be President Obama’s objective.
