FAIR Statement in Support of Gosar’s Bill to Repeal the Cuban Adjustment Act
…The Cuban Adjustment Act is being widely abused, at great expense to American taxpayers. It is time to end this special immigration policy and treat Cuban nationals the same way we treat citizens of every other country.
- Dan Stein, President of FAIR
(October 23, 2015 — Washington, D.C.) – The following statement was issued by Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), in support of the “Ending Special National Origin-Based Immigration Programs for Cubans Act of 2015”:
“FAIR congratulates Rep. Paul Gosar for introducing long overdue legislation to repeal the Cuban Adjustment Act. The law, which created a separate immigration policy for Cuban nationals is an outdated relic of the Cold War. Continuing this policy serves no national interest and is perpetuated purely for domestic political purposes.
“The United States has now normalized relations with Cuba. Our immigration policies vis à vis that nation need to be normalized as well. While Cuba, under the Castros remains far from an ideal, democratic nation, political and economic conditions are no worse than in countless other countries around the world. As a nation, we can continue to encourage political and economic reform in Cuba, but there is no justification for maintaining a policy that allows any Cuban who reaches U.S. soil to remain and gain legal residency status within one year.
“A recent investigative report by the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel provides conclusive evidence that the Cuban Adjustment Act is being widely abused, at great expense to American taxpayers. It is time to end this special immigration policy and treat Cuban nationals the same way we treat citizens of every other country.”
