FAIR Applauds Nomination of Thomas Homan as Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
(November 14, 2017 — Washington, D.C.) - The following statement was issued by Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) in regard to President Trump’s nomination of Thomas Homan as director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement:
“Today’s announcement that Thomas Homan has been nominated to serve as the director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is welcome news to everyone who believes that firm, but measured enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws is vital to our security and the interests of the American people.
“As acting director of the agency since January, Homan has demonstrated that ICE – like all law enforcement departments – can prioritize the removal of illegal aliens who pose a unique danger to the American people, while continuing to carry out the agency’s other duties. Under Homan, ICE’s enforcement strategy has been to deter illegal immigration by ending Obama-era policies that gave most immigration law violators and their employers a free pass. As in all areas of law enforcement, deterring people from breaking laws in the first place is the most effective strategy.
“Homan has also sent a clear message to so-called sanctuary jurisdictions – who refuse to cooperate with ICE, or honor requests to detain and turn over criminal aliens – by increasing ICE enforcement in those jurisdictions. While Congress has done little to address state and local obstruction of federal immigration enforcement, Homan has acted decisively and effectively.
“The American people believe that their jobs, their communities, their tax dollars, and their vital social institutions need to be protected from unchecked illegal immigration. In Homan, they will have a strong ally at the helm of ICE.”
