FAIR Applauds House Passage of H.R. 3941, the Schools Not Shelters Act
Schools are for Educating Kids, Not for Housing Illegal Aliens
(Washington, D.C., July 19, 2023) The following statement was issued by Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) in response to passage of H.R. 3941, the Schools Not Shelters Act:
“The House of Representatives took an important step toward protecting American schoolchildren and the integrity of their education with passage of H.R. 3941, the Schools Not Shelters Act. The vote was 222-201.
“The Biden administration’s reckless border and immigration policies have resulted in unprecedented numbers of new illegal aliens entering our country, overwhelming the resources of countless communities nationwide. Self-declared sanctuary jurisdictions are compounding the impact of this crisis by turning public school facilities into shelters for largely unvetted adult migrants who flock to their communities. The bill prohibits public schools and institutions of higher education that receive federal funds from housing illegal aliens.
“Parents whose kids attend these schools – many already failing to provide a first-class education – are rightly alarmed at the prospect of single adults being housed in these facilities. H.R. 3941 would ensure that America’s schools are used for educating American’s children, not as shelters for homeless migrants who are showing up in response to the Biden administration’s open-borders policies.
“Instead of burdening state and local governments, the Biden administration should stop the flow of illegal immigration at the southern border and end the humanitarian crisis created by it. At the same time, cities and states should not impose the burdens of illegal immigration on their citizens through sanctuary policies. This bill ensures that sanctuary cities that do so face the prospect of losing federal education dollars.
“We encourage the Senate – where 100 members claim to have no higher priority than the well-being of American kids – to follow suit.”
