Mexican Immigration Agent Killed by Venezuelan Migrants Attempting to Reach the U.S. Border

FAIR Take | January 2025
Right before the new year, a Mexican immigration agent named Luis Alberto Olivas García tragically became one of the latest casualties of the Biden border crisis. Grisly details have emerged of his murder, carried out by Venezuelan migrants on their way to the U.S. border.
On December 30, Agent Olivas García was attacked by two Venezuelan migrants after he asked for their immigration papers at a migration checkpoint in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, about 30 miles south of El Paso, Texas. According to the Latin Times, the suspects pelted rocks at the agent when he chased them before beating him and throwing him down a hill. Then, officials believe one of the men went down the hill and hit Garcia Olivas with a rock on the head until he died.
Chihuahua Public Safety Director Gilberto Loya noted that smugglers now encourage migrants to resist Mexican authorities who try to stop them. This comes, he says, as a result of a surge in “desperation” for illegal migrants to reach the U.S. border while the current administration is still in office.
Indeed, smugglers across North America are already adapting to the impending end of permissive Biden-era border policies by directly encouraging migrants to “rush” before the new administration takes office. Many illegal aliens, especially Venezuelans, know that the illegal parole programs letting them enter are likely to be scrapped by President-elect Trump. Just last week, FAIR covered a shocking incident where a group of armed gang members tried to rush the border and violently force entry into the U.S. This “desperation” to violate our immigration laws is now turning deadly even before illegal aliens enter.
After the migrants’ arrest for the death of Agent Olivas Garcia, an investigation revealed tattoos on one of the suspects, suggesting he is a “guide” for the Tren de Aragua gang. This violent Venezuelan gang was once unknown in the U.S. but has now spread to states in every part of our country. The senseless and brutal murder of this Mexican immigration agent is sadly consistent with the gang’s violent conduct. Among other things, Tren de Aragua is infamous for physically attacking NYPD officers and for its members having a “green light” to U.S. shoot law enforcement. This violence now apparently extends to law enforcement before they even reach the U.S., and extends to law enforcement in transit countries.
This death, like so many other horrific incidents, was entirely preventable. Human trafficking, drug smuggling, and even the humanitarian crisis in the Darién Gap are all linked directly to U.S. border security (or lack thereof). When bad actors know our borders are weak, they rush to cross illegally and brutally claim lives like Olivas García’s in the process. The end of open borders policies causing these tragedies cannot come soon enough.
