Upcoming OR Senate Vote Could Give Illegal Aliens State Driver’s Licenses
The Oregon legislature is seeking to give illegal aliens driver’s licenses, an act that clearly undermines both immigration law and the will of Oregon voters. In 2014, Oregonians soundly defeated Measure 88, by a 2 to 1 margin. Measure 88 would have affirmed SB 833 – making state driver’s licenses available to individuals who could not prove legal presence in the United States.
Unbelievably, the Senate is trying to pull the same shenanigan again! Originally passed by the House unanimously, HB 4111 would only make technical changes to Oregon’s REAL ID bill – legislation that passed to ensure that Oregon complies with Congressionally mandated security measures after the 9/11 attacks.
However, the Senate has amended the bill’s language to once again give so-called temporary driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. The bill goes so far as to overtly prevent the state Department of Transportation from attempting to verify the documents presented to them.
We need your help right now! Please call your legislators today and urge them to oppose HB 4111 as amended by the Senate. Tell them not to let some senators run roughshod over Oregon voters.
This year’s legislative session is extremely short (likely ending this Saturday), but, no more than 35 total days, and is designed to address budget issues and fix existing laws. Adding this controversial amendment to the REAL ID bill abuses the purpose of the short session because legislative items need to move quickly and not debated thoroughly so the session can end by March 9.
Time is short! Please call your legislators today and tell them to oppose HB 4111 as amended.
