Sheriffs Call On Congress To Enforce Immigration Laws

Speaking on behalf of nearly 400 sheriffs across the United States, Sheriff Thomas Hodgson (Bristol County, Massachusetts) declared, “Enough is enough” and is challenging Congress to act now to secure our southern border and enforce immigration laws.

The sheriffs, from 40 states, signed a letter that was sent to every member of Congress and addresses the problems and issues that law enforcement officials face every day because of uncontrolled immigration. While some sheriffs have opted to either remain neutral or openly oppose federal enforcement in their counties, many more are taking a stand to protect their communities. In addition to the sheriffs circulating the letter among their peers, it was also endorsed by the National Sheriff’s Association.

Previously, Sheriffs joined Advocates for Victims of Illegal Alien Crimes (AVIAC) and held a press conference and lobby day to draw Members of Congress’ attention to the need to secure the border and enforce our immigration laws. Sheriff Hodgson drafted this letter for circulation to demonstrate law enforcement support across the nation for upholding the rule of law.

The sheriffs also met with senior White House policy advisors to discuss the ramifications of illegal immigration and their role in working with the federal government.

There is still an opportunity for sheriffs to engage. They can still add their names to the growing list of signers who want to ensure their communities are safe from dangerous criminal aliens. The public has a role in this effort as well. Often times, sheriffs need to hear from their constituents to be sure they have their support.
