California Mayor : Sanctuary Cities Are "Immoral, Illegal, And Unconstitutional"

This week Escondido voted 4-1 in favor of filing a “friend of the court” brief in support of the Trump administration’s lawsuit against California’s sanctuary state law.

“They continue to harbor illegal criminals. Harboring and protecting illegal criminals and giving them more rights than our citizens is immoral, illegal, and unconstitutional,” Escondido Mayor Sam Abed told FAIR in an exclusive interview.

Under Abed’s leadership, Escondido became the first jurisdiction in San Diego County to file an amicus brief in support of the federal case. This week, the Aliso Viejo and Huntington Beach city councils also voted in favor of similar motions.

Last month, the Los Alamitos City Council kicked off the anti-sanctuary movement when it backed a proposal to join the legal challenge to SB4, California’s three sanctuary measures which took effect in January.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors and the Mission Viejo City Council followed suit in March and on April 17 the San Diego Board of Supervisors could be the latest to officially voice its objections.

Asylee

One of the six legal immigrant categories, an asylee is an alien either in the United States or applying to enter at a U.S. port of entry who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her country of nationality because of persecution, or because of a well-founded fear of persecution. If the alien does not have a nationality, the country of nationality is the last country in which she habitually resided. The persecution or fear thereof can be based on race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. After one year in the United States, asylees are admissible for permanent resident status. Although there is no limit on the number of people who may be granted asylum protection in any year, aslyee admissions for permanent residence are limited to 10,000 per fiscal year.
