Trump to Issue Comprehensive Executive Order on Immigration This Week

Last Thursday, President Trump indicated that he will soon sign a “comprehensive” executive order to stop the overwhelming surge of illegal aliens seeking to take advantage of our weak asylum laws.

Specifically, the president said that migrants must lawfully present themselves at a port of entry in order to apply for asylum, rather than apply after crossing the border illegally. It is also possible that the executive order could include a tightening of the “credible fear” standard to prevent illegal aliens with meritless claims from to easily enter and stay in the United States while awaiting legal proceedings.

The president made it clear that the goal of the upcoming executive order is to restore integrity to our asylum system and stop future caravans from forming. “If these caravans are allowed into our country, only bigger and more emboldened caravans will follow, he said. “We will not allow our generosity to be abused by those who would break our laws, defy our rules, violate our borders, break into our country illegally — we won’t allow it. Mass uncontrolled immigration is especially unfair to the many wonderful law-abiding immigrants already living here, who followed the rules and waited their turn.”

Dan Stein, FAIR’s president, praised President Trump’s comments and the forthcoming executive order in a statement issued last week. “The president called for bipartisan support for an effort that allows us to continue to protect legitimate asylum seekers, while discouraging people who are intent on abusing our policies to gain entry to our country, Stein said. “We look forward to seeing the president’s plans to honor our humanitarian commitments and protect the interests and security of the American people.”
