California’s Newsom Pushes Free Health Care for Illegals

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom this week bared his leftist credentials during an appearance on the left-wing Pod Save America podcast when he expressed determination to push a single paper system for everyone in the state regardless of immigration status.

“I’d like to see if we can control our own destiny,” Newsom said. He continued, “I’m not naive about it. I did universal health care when I was Mayor [of San Francisco], fully implemented regardless of pre-existing conditions, ability to pay, and regardless of your immigration status.”

Newsom is far ahead of Republican John Cox in the race to lead the sanctuary state. Given the Golden State is virtually a one-party state, Newsom might pursue his dream of universal health-care coverage for illegal immigrants by expanding the state’s Medicaid program, which is known as Medi-Cal.

The effort may prove difficult even in a state that has bent over backwards to provide illegal aliens with a host of new rights and benefits. Democrats in the Assembly tried to finance a $1 billion expansion of Medi-Cal to extend coverage to undocumented immigrant adults under 26 and create a tax credit for health insurance premiums, but their effort was defeated during budget negotiations largely because of the outrageous costs.

If it were to gain approval, Californians would not be the only victims. Because the federal government presently picks up two-thirds of this California program, all Americans would be paying. Not to mention, it would also create another huge magnet for illegal immigrants.
