National Origins Quota System

A system of quotas for immigrants, established by the Immigration Act of 1924, which used national origin, race, and ancestry as basis for limiting immigration to the United States. Under this quota system, the number of immigrants from any particular country allowed into the United States each year was based on the number of immigrants from that country already residing in the United States. The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 abolished this system of quotas.
