The Fiscal Burden Of Illegal Aliens In Pennsylvania
FAIR’s 2010 study, “The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on United States Taxpayers” estimated at $1.4 billion the annual state and local fiscal costs borne by Pennsylvania taxpayers resulting from an estimated 140,000 illegal aliens and 27,400 of their U.S.-born children.
The breakdown of the 2010 estimate by category is below ($millions):
K-12 education | $450.5 | |
English (LEP) | $125.4 | |
Sub-total | $575.9 | |
Medicaid | $78.1 | |
SCHIP + | $33.0 | |
Justice | $74.3 | |
Welfare + | $222.0 | |
General | $395.6 | |
Total | $1,377.9 |
There are tax collections received by the state and local governments from the illegal aliens and their employers that offset some of that estimated fiscal cost. The study puts those estimated tax receipts (in $millions) as follows:
Property tax | $14.8 |
Sales tax | $23.6 |
Income tax | $10.6 |
Total | $49.0 |
This leaves the net fiscal burden on Pennsylvania taxpayers at the state and local level at about $1.3 billion per year. That burden would increase if the taxpayer’s share of their federal taxes that go for programs used by illegal aliens were included.
