FAIR’s Five-Point Plan: How to Quickly and Effectively
Address the Border Crisis
In his first 100 days in office, President Joe Biden created a historic border crisis through a series of Executive Actions and policy changes aimed at dismantling immigration enforcement and controls, while also endorsing massive amnesty proposals. This crisis was both predictable and preventable, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. Check out FAIR’s five solutions and learn what Biden should be doing right now to quickly and effectively solve the border crisis!
Fully reinstate Title 42 to deny the entry of migrants who pose a health risk, regardless of age. Title 42, issued by the CDC, allows CBP to quickly expel people caught entering the U.S. illegally due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Biden administration kicked off this crisis by making the decision to exempt unaccompanied alien minors, thereby creating an incentive for families who desired to come to the United States to send their minor children to the border. Many of these children endured horrific conditions on their way to the border, and this magnetic policy shift shoulders most of the blame.
Require those seeking asylum to make a claim in the first safe nation, and require asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico as their claim is heard. One thing is clear – the Trump Administration’s Migrant Protection Protocols program successfully ended the 2019 border crisis. For too long, our country operated under the standard of “catch-and-release,” where asylum-seeking illegal aliens lived in the United States with work permits and quasi-legal documentation. This gave them a false sense of permanency in the United States and incentivized future migrants to take the frivolous asylum claim route, knowing that they would achieve their ultimate goal of reaching the United States to live comfortably in the shadows, even if their claim ultimately failed.
Reinstate agreements with all Northern Triangle nations to accept and protect asylum seekers closer to their home countries. This was another tool the Trump administration used to end the 2019 border crisis. The agreements made with Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador ensured that migrants have the opportunity to apply for asylum closer to their home countries. This is the international standard of asylum and a commonsense solution to providing actual asylum-seeking migrants with the opportunity to safely leave their home country if in fact their government is persecuting them for their religious beliefs, sexuality, or political opinions.
Ensure all families and unaccompanied minors who come here illegally are reunited safely at home, not in the United States.
Allow ICE to do its job by removing arbitrary limitations on who may be arrested or removed. ICE has a Congressionally-mandated role to enforce our immigration laws in the interior of the country. Preventing them from doing their jobs serves no purpose and not only threatens public safety, but incentivizes wayward employers to hire illegal aliens.
