Washington Post Calls Biden Border Strategy “Incoherent”
How bad have things gotten at the border? So bad that even apologists for illegal immigration, like the Washington Post, are turning on the Biden administration. In a Sunday editorial, the paper asserted that “President Biden needs a coherent strategy for the border.”
One might argue with the Post’s contention that the border crisis is a product of incoherence. There is ample evidence to suggest that border chaos and unrestricted immigration, no matter the cost, is a deliberate policy on the part of the administration and that it is being carried out with ruthless efficiency. Nonetheless, the Post’s blistering critiques of the Biden-Harris policies are a sign that even the administration’s elitist cheering squad is starting to have doubts about the impact of these policies.
Among the Washington Post editorial board’s bill of indictments:
The Biden administration cannot explain its immigration policies to the American people (or anyone else). The “Biden administration has unleashed a torrent of words and goals untethered to specific policies and timetables,” the Post charges. Upon entering office, the president scrapped effective border policies he inherited from his predecessor, but failed to provide “a clear roadmap to address the immediate crisis” that his actions set in motion.
The administration’s “convoluted messaging — telling migrants not to seek entry to the United States while at the same time relaxing or scrapping an array of measures that would actually dissuade them, and providing relief to migrants on both sides of the border — has been a failure.”
Addressing “root causes” of migration isn’t going to address the crisis. Vice President Kamala Harris’ recently unveiled “Five Pillars” for fixing Central America – ending poverty, crime, and corruption – is nothing more than a high-minded way of saying they have no real intention of enforcing our borders or immigration laws. It’s “a list that anyone with a passing knowledge of the region could have compiled,” the Post observes. It is also unrealistic. “What is mostly missing from the sweeping rhetoric and broad-strokes analysis is an actual plan for action.”
The administration’s border policies are politically toxic. This may be the factor that scares the elitist media more than anything else. The unending chaos at the border could end the Democrats’ already tenuous grip on control of Congress in the midterm elections, and with it, any hope of enacting a whole range of leftist policy priorities. A June Harvard-Harris poll found that 64 percent of voters want tighter policies implemented to secure the border. And that was before the release of June and July data indicating that some 400,000 migrants were apprehended at the border during a season in which illegal migration generally ebbs.
The administration’s “failure is measurable, and it is politically toxic,” warns the Post. That toxicity is the product of a “policy whose incoherence has yielded pressure at the border that may cost the Democrats control of one or both houses of Congress in next year’s midterm elections. So far, there is nothing in the administration’s short- or long-term strategizing that is likely to shift that dynamic.”
Until this point, the Biden-Harris assault on border and immigration enforcement has benefited from the willful blindness of the elitist media that has chosen not to report the health, security, and humanitarian disaster that is playing out. That the Washington Post is now going so far as to accuse the administration of lacking a coherent policy is significant – and perhaps offers a glimmer of hope.
