U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Falsehoods on Immigration - Part 8
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has put up a website giving what it calls “10 Immigration Facts Everyone Can Agree To.” The so-called facts are both falsehoods and half-truths. Here is their #8:U.S. Chamber’s Myth: “Today’s immigrants are not assimilating into U.S. society.”
U.S. Chamber’s Fact: “Today’s immigrants are buying homes, becoming U.S. citizens, and learning English.”
FAIR’s Fact:According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of immigrant residents over age five who speak a language other than English in the home increased from 47 million in 2000 to 59.5 million in 2012. That 27 percent increase raised the share of immigrants who speak other languages at home from 18 percent to 20.6 percent. This is a trend that demonstrates that traditional patterns of assimilation are now overloaded.
