Tech Lobby Shells Out Big Bucks for Amnesty
“Big Tech pulled out its checkbook to help push an immigration bill closer to the finish line. Google, Facebook, Oracle and a full slate of companies and executives showered the Senate’s Gang of Eight with a series of donations just before the chamber passed a bill that included the industry’s most prized reforms — including more H-1B visas,” Politico reports.”Google and Microsoft donated to Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) while Facebook backed the lawmaker’s leadership PAC called Common Sense Colorado, according to recent federal campaign filings. Meanwhile, top Silicon Valley investors — like Ron Conway and John Doerr — contributed big to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).”
Gang of Eight Cancels Meeting With Business Lobby Aimed at House
“Architects of the Senate’s immigration bill on Monday canceled a meeting that had been planned with business groups and other supporters to try to rally momentum for the legislation, in a sign of how difficult it will be to enact the reforms,” Reuters reports.”Several business representatives who participated in the meeting said they were concerned that the Senate’s involvement would not play well in the House. Republican members of the House have repeatedly rejected the Senate’s bill and are working on smaller enforcement and work-visa bills that do not include a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States.”“Some of the business groups ‘were outraged,’ said one lobbyist, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private. ‘Even if what (the senators) said was right, they know how unpopular they are in the House,’ the lobbyist said.”
More Than a Dozen Illegal Aliens Suspects in Gang Rape
“On Wednesday, police in Austin arrested two Mexican nationals who reportedly participated in the gang-rape of a 13-year-old girl on June 29. The girl, a runaway, who lives at the Settlement Home for Children, was picked up by three Latino men and driven to the Avalon Arms apartments, where she was raped by a large group of men for several hours, according to police,” the Examiner reported.
Rep. Lamar Smith — GOP Needs to Face Facts on Immigration
“[I]n writing our immigration laws, we should put the interests of American workers and taxpayers first. Others want to put illegal immigrants and foreign workers first. They seize on two numbers to club opponents into submission — 27 percent and 11 million. Both figures are used in deceptive ways,” says Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) in an op-ed.”Republicans can and must appeal to Hispanic voters, but we should start with the facts, not fiction, before deciding on the best way forward. A 2012 Pew Hispanic Center poll found that immigration ranks below the economy, jobs, and health care for Hispanic voters. So the way forward is clear — emphasize the need for educational opportunities for young Hispanics and the need for more and better jobs for adults.”
DHS Ignores Border Data Now, Why Would Amnesty Change That?
“As Congress weighs whether to pin immigration reform on reaching a threshold of border security, the measure most often cited would call on the Department of Homeland Security to stop 90 percent of illegal border crossings. Doing that means figuring out how to persuade people like Flores not to try again and stopping others headed for el norte from slipping over the border,” the Arizona Republic says.”That, in turn, hinges on solid answers to such questions as: How many people actually get through? Where do they get across? When they’re caught, do they give up or keep trying until they make it? Homeland Security officials don’t fully know the answers to those questions. And the reason, say leading migration researchers, is that DHS officials don’t want to know, and don’t want the public to know, either.”
