Foundation and Major Gifts Officer

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a well-established national nonprofit, public-interest membership organization, seeks a Foundation and Major Gifts Officer to assist with a wide variety of fundraising activities including many aspects of the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective and current major and mid-level donors, as well as the periodic preparation of foundation proposals.

This development position prepares materials for prospect solicitation and stewardship, and reports on visit/solicitation activities as required; helps design fundraising strategies and determine appropriate steps for cultivation and solicitation; interacts with donors to assist in the maintenance and development of relationships; assists with the creation of development materials; researches new funding sources; participates in direct mail/marketing functions to include online giving program; organize events that bring donors together.


Position requires a Bachelor's degree in related field, demonstrated experience as a successful fundraiser, excellent verbal communication skills; excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; capability to think and act strategically (including the ability to grasp and understand complex policy analysis); high level of creativity, initiative, and motivation; follow through on projects; maturity, personal flexibility and sense of humor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a portfolio of foundations focusing on $10,000 and above gift levels
  • Work directly with executive leadership, Board members, regional and state directors, and program and campaign representatives to secure and steward foundation grants.
  • Develop and manage a calendar of deadlines for proposals, reports and other communications with current and prospective foundation funders.
  • Write letters of inquiry, grant proposals, reports and other correspondence as required by foundations.  Provide writing and editing support to program staff that are pursuing foundation grants.
  • In collaboration with FAIR development team, help create an annual strategic plan to secure grants and other gifts, including membership renewals, upgrades, and new sources that support institutional priorities.
  • Maintain data and contacts in our tracking and recordation software, PIDI, to ensure complete and accurate information on activities, including actions, proposals, and contact information, to document progress.  
  • Collaborate with FAIR staff across the organization to build and sustain a productive and successful foundation fundraising program, participating in regular meetings with program staff to get current and forward-looking information.
  • Consult with accounting on program budgets and financial reports for restricted activities.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge and understanding of the foundation community and grant making trends, including ongoing research on foundations, including funding priorities, grants to similar organizations, dollar range of grants funded and proposal deadlines, and Board and staff contacts.
  • Support the mission and philosophy of FAIR and maintain a working knowledge of priority campaigns and programs (including our developing planned giving program), as well as relevant local and regional initiatives.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors Degree required.
  • Minimum of four years of development experience with proven success in foundation fundraising of grants of $10,000 or more. 
  • Strategic thinker and writer able to communicate FAIR’s mission and programs in ways that appeal to and fit with foundation priorities.
  • Goal oriented. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments to get information on program activities, accomplishments, and plans.
  • Extensive experience writing about complex issues and in response to multiple deadlines.
  • Knowledge of the foundation grant making strategies and the identification and cultivation of key foundation personnel.
